Greenwich

The Greenwich Sustainability Hub

The plan for The Hub is to connect people in Greenwich with information to help them make their lives more sustainable. For the moment the focus is on building a community to share discoveries, signpost existing resources, find out what is needed to help people take the next step and encouraging everyone to support groups already working to protect and improve the environment across the borough.

So far we have a Facebook group (which has just passed 100 members in 2 months) and I am working on building other social media and a website to make all the resources more widely available.

I am also building a map to showcase sustainable businesses, projects and spaces and sharing this with other groups to get their input.

We also have an Eco Calendar to help businesses plan campaigns and others plan themes for activity groups.

As and when Covid restrictions allow I want to secure a space to create sharing libraries, swap events, repair cafes, a refill shop, recycling drop off points, mending and making workshops and hopefully a community venue for swapping and sharing of skills of all sorts.

Whilst that isn’t possible I want to connect with as many groups around Greenwich as I can. Hopefully connecting them to each other, promoting grass roots efforts and building awareness of the plans for The Hub.

I hope that serves to make a little clearer what i am trying to do but if you have any questions do please let me know.

The email address for The Hub is Sustainabilityingreenwich@gmail.com and do send me any information I can add to the map or indeed share within the group about GCBB more widely.

Top tips or Sustainable resources in Greenwich:

A fantastic repurposing project making great pieces from rescued rubbish. Their profits go to support Greenwich and Bexley Hospice who desperately need our help right now so do go and see what treasures you can find.

Made in Greenwich

A stunning gallery of local artists work, great gifts, locally produced food and much more. They now have an online shop and will hopefully soon be able to get back to their programme of workshops and craft sessions. This is part of GCDA who coordinate amazing projects across the borough, diverting potential food waste from businesses, to community groups and shelters.

Charlton Toy Library

Don’t buy new toys, support this great initiative to save us all money and space. Hire toys from their catalogue and keep your small people entertained whilst avoiding adding to the plastic toy mountain. They also take donations of good quality toys and run outreach programmes supporting local parents in need with baby items of equipment and clothes.

Mamma Kind

This volunteer run group take donations of clothes, equipment, toys and nappies for 0-2 year olds, sort them and distribute them around Greenwich. Join in at one of their sorting events, pass on your children’s outgrown clothes and help out another local family.

Clothes for Causes

Great local shop selling new and second hand designer and good quality clothes and using the profits to support the homeless with essentials. Entirely run by volunteers they would love your donations and your purchasing.
